None of it is good for UnitedHealth.  Multiple rookie security failures - including no use of multi-factor authentication for remote login, no network segmentation, and no internal security threat hunting.

I don't know if there will be lawsuits over this, but this is all basically indefensible.  After all, they are a healthcare provider, and HIPAA/HITECH mandates all of this.

Liberals Use Insults

When John DeLorean at Pontiac stuffed the big 389 cubic inch V-8 from the full-size Bonneville and Grand Prix into the midsized Tempest LeMans to create the 1964 GTO, it kicked off the whole muscle car fad in Detroit.

Over at Mopar, big blocks went into sportily-styled midsize B-body variants to create cars like the 1966 Dodge Charger and the 1967 Plymouth GTX,...

Grizzly bear shot in self defense at 10 feet by Jimmy Cox with a 10mm, Sept. 18, 2018, AK

The use of handguns as a defense against bears has been shown to be effective 98% of the time. In this study, all cases which can be documented, where a handgun was fired in defense against a bear, are included. This is done by design to guard against selection bias.  All cases cite the source for the case information. Unlike other attempts to put a number on how effective handguns, long guns, or bear spray is in defending against bears, every case is des...

According to the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD), upon arrival, they were directed to a 55-year-old man who was initially believed to be the victim. He reported that he was approached by a 26-year-old man and another individual, who fired multiple gunshots at him. The 55-year-old man sustained no apparent injuries.

Officers say they located evidence of a crime scene at the location, including spent shell casings. The 26-year-old man and the other individual were arrested a short distance away after being identified by the 55-year-old man.

According to police during the investigation, new evidence came in. It was determined that the 55-year-old man had actually attacked the 26-year-old and another person with a crowbar before the shooting occurred. As a result, the shooting is believed to have been self-defense.

This conclusion was reached after the 55-year-old was initially released under the belief that he was the victim. The firearm used in the incident has been collected as evidence, and both men have been released.

The SAPD is continuing its investigation into this developing case.

Jefferson On Approaching Death

by JDZ in Never Yet Melted at 10:40, Monday, 13 May

On May 11 in 1819, Thomas Jefferson wrote about making peace with his slow descent toward death.

A decline of health, at the age of 76, was naturally to be expected,” he wrote, “and is a warning of an event which cannot be distant, and whose approach I contemplate with little concern. For indeed in no circumstance has nature been kinder to us than in the soft gradations by which she prepares us to part willingly with what we are not destined always to retain.

“First one faculty is withdrawn and then another, sight, hearing, memory, eucrasy, affections, and friends, filched one by one till we are left among strangers, the mere monuments of times past, and specimens of antiquity for the observation of the curious.”

Sunshine

by Pawpaw in PawPaw's House at 09:46, Monday, 13 May

Maybe the rain is over for a while  It started raining on Saturday afternoon, rained all day Sunday, and when I awoke this morning,  I was still hearing thunder.  In the past hour, the skies started to clear and we have sunshine on a Monday morning. That is better.  The back yard is awash, and maybe things can start to dry out.

Yesterday was Mother's Day and I am fortunate to still be able to talk to my Momma.

I have a list in my pocket of errands to run.  The bank, the Post Office, the grocers.  Belle wants a homemade chili-cheese dog for lunch.  I've been with that woman for over 20 years and I've never had her ask for a hot dog for lunch.  A good hot dog is hard to beat, and they have always been one of my guilty pleasures.

Back when we were both working, there would be times when our schedules overlapped.  She'd be working and I was off.  There is a little Indian casino not far from here that had a hot dog stand inthe lobby, and they made great hot dogs. Sold them for one dollar.  Sometimes I'd drive up the road, just to get a hot dog. Or two.  It was a cheap meal that I didn't have to cook. ...

Finland’s Prototype Belt-Fed GPMG: L41 Sampo

by Ian McCollum in Forgotten Weapons at 09:27, Monday, 13 May

During the 1930s, there was interest in Finland in replacing the Maxim heavy machine gun with something handier and more mobile. There were experiments with large drum magazines for the LS-26 light machine gun, but these were not satisfactory. Aimo Lahti began to work on a gas-operated GPMG, but lack of funding and competing priorities led to it having slow progress until the eve of the Winter War. By the time the gun was completed and the first preproduction batch ready for troop trials, the Continuation War was underway.

Twenty eight of the L41 Sampo machine guns were sent out to a variety of units for field testing in the fall of 1942, and the guns were generally well liked, although not perfect. Before improvements and full-scale production could begin, though, the Finnish military was basically distracted by an al...

I know, most people think it takes a lot of time and effort, but it doesn’t have to. Give this fast recipe a try. The Editors’ Quote of the Day:

by James Wesley Rawles in SurvivalBlog.com at 03:01, Monday, 13 May

“The most interesting political questions throughout history have been whether humans will be ruled or free, whether they will be responsible for their actions as individuals or left irresponsible as members of society, and whether they can live in peace by volitional agreements alone. The fundamental question of politics has always been whether there should be politics.” – Karl Hess

If you’ve ever been shooting a semi-auto handgun and heard a “click” instead of a “bang,” one of two things probably happened: you panicked, or you confidently went into the clearing process that you’ve played over in your mind or practiced during training. Now, if you’ve never heard the “click,” just wait. Eventually, it will happen, so you should train your mind and body for the inevitable by learning to recognize and clear semi-auto handgun malfunctions.

The Ninth Circuit Did WHAT?

by Carl Bussjaeger in The Zelman Partisans at 12:02, Sunday, 12 May

This is not the sort of headline I expect to see coming out of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Ninth Circuit: Felon Has ‘Right to Possess Firearm for Self-Defense’
On Thursday a three-judge panel from the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit decided that Steven Duarte, a felon, has a “right to possess a firearm for self-defense.”

That opening sentence explains much: a three judge (2 Dubya appointees, and a Trump appointee) panel, not en banc. I’ve no doubt that the state is preparing a motion for en banc review.

The decision, United States v. Duarte, is here. The majority based  this ruling on BRUEN, with a dash of HELLER: there is no national “historical tradition of” barring felons who have completed their sentences ...

10:55

Quote of the Day

Duarte is an American citizen, and thus one of “the people” whom the Second Amendment protects. The Second Amendment’s plain text and historically understood meaning therefore presumptively guarantee his individual right to possess a firearm for self-defense. The Government failed to rebut that presumption by demonstrating that permanently depriving Duarte of this fundamental right is otherwise consistent with our Nation’s history. We therefore hold that § 922(g)(1) violates Duarte’s Second Amendment rights and is unconstitutional as applied to him.

Over the past month I've done a couple bullet casting sessions, mostly making 158 grain (nominally) lead semiwadcutters in a 2-cavity Lee TL358-158SWC mold. I also cast a couple hundred .490 round balls for my .50 caliber muzzleloading rifles.

Bullets cast from this Lee mold have a nice reputation for accuracy in .38 Special and mild .357 Magnum loads. I also like that the design incorporates a wide meplat that will perform well if I shoot anything besides paper or steel with it.

This image swiped borrowed from the Lee Precision website shows was they look like:

Two private security officers tried convince the man to leave when they say he charged at another man passing by. Authorities say the passerby tried to get away, but the man kept charging at him.

This prompted the passerby to shoot the man, according to police. The security officers then seized the gun and held it for police until they responded to the scene.

The man who fired the gun was not immediately charged as the firearm was found to be legally possessed and concealed. Authorities say he also remained at the scene and cooperated with officials.

Blk Lbl Integrated Handguard/Bipod for the Q Fix

Ever since I first saw Blk Lbl at SHOT Show many years ago I’ve really liked their handguard-integrated bipods. They are completely slick and unobtrusive when folded up, but offer a good range of motion, stability, and adjustability when deployed, while being lighter than all but the lightest polymer detachable bipods when combined with a handguard.

In addition to making these units for the AR15, AR10, Tavor 7, Tavor X95, Tikka, and MDR platforms, they also offer them for the Q Fix (and also SIG Cross). I’m very happy to have one on my Fix!

War on self-defense? Some updates.

by TPOL Nathan in The Price of Liberty at 20:00, Saturday, 11 May

Despite recent snows in the High County (the Rockies and Sierras and Black Hills, at least), the summer tourist season is nearly upon us. With that, people are traveling and warm days and cool nights (but not too cool) bring out the rats. The human kind as well as the kind with tails.

And courtesy of the current fad of “from the river to the sea” protests and occupations and “peaceful” vandalism and confrontations on and off campuses across the country? People are concerned about the safety of themselves and their families as they travel and as travelers come to their area.

The mainstream media loves to feed on and ramp up these fears. Europeans and even Brits and Australians continue to be sold the idea that the States are a lawless, gun-violence-filled land that resembles their imaginations of the Old, Old, Wild West – an image pushed by Hollywood for a century.

Gunfights every day at noon on Front Street; madmen (and madwomen pretending to be men) invading schools and mowing down teachers and children, war parties attacking buses and RVs on remote Interstate highways, and gang fights ...

In 1978, as AMD-65 rifles in service were starting to get worn out, FÉG launched a program to refurbish the old original AKM-63 rifles with new wood furniture for new military service. Conversions began in 1980, and when the supply of old rifles ran out, the factory began making new ones to the same basic pattern. However, production was slow, and by 1982 only about 50,000 had been produced (about 35,500 for Hungarian use and another 14,500 for export). At that point, complaints had built up about the length of the rifles, as pe...

by David Yamane in Gun Culture 2.0 at 07:23, Saturday, 11 May

My forthcoming book, Gun Curious, is a true “desk-to-bookstore,” 100% North Carolina product. I learned to shoot in North Carolina, I became a gun owner in North Carolina, I wrote my book in North Carolina, and my publisher is in North Carolina.

Last week, I was fortunate to tour McFarland & Company Publishers’ offices, print shop, and warehouse in Jefferson, North Carolina.

I am not a good videographer, but this short video highlights some of the processes I observed and participated in. I also took home the first copy of my book and helped them box up 150 copies to send to Dallas, where I will be hawking the book next week!

Be sure to watch to the end so you can see the book warehouse hazing ritual I was put through.

New Field Optic

by SLG in pistol-training.com at 07:00, Saturday, 11 May

I don’t see anyone carrying this thing concealed, but as a field optic, it seems very good. The mounting system is much better in person than I thought it would be, and the quality is typical Trijicon. Mounted on an M&P 45 or an HK45, I think it will do well for my field pistol […]

Shelving: Storage Projects – Part 2, by A.F.

by SurvivalBlog Contributor in SurvivalBlog.com at 03:03, Saturday, 11 May

Back to building cabinets. A cabinet is only a box built from materials the same width having smooth parallel sides. For wall hung units, the depth is usually around 12 inches. If you subtract for the thickness of face frame material (approximately ¾ inch) then the plywood panels can all be cut at 11-1/4 inches. You can make them which ever width you want, but an advantage of this size is that each full sheet of plywood can yield four sections eight feet long. If you are brand new to woodworking, keep in mind that a saw blade eats somewhere …

Editors’ Prepping Progress

by James Wesley Rawles in SurvivalBlog.com at 03:02, Saturday, 11 May

To be prepared for a crisis, every Prepper must establish goals and make both long-term and short-term plans. In this column, the SurvivalBlog editors review their week’s prep activities and planned prep activities for the coming week. These range from healthcare and gear purchases to gardening, ranch improvements, bug-out bag fine-tuning, and food storage. This is something akin to our Retreat Owner Profiles, but written incrementally and in detail, throughout the year.  We always welcome you to share your own successes and wisdom in your e-mailed letters. We post many of those — or excerpts thereof — in the Odds …

The Editors’ Quote of the Day:

by James Wesley Rawles in SurvivalBlog.com at 03:01, Saturday, 11 May

“O Lord, rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure. Have mercy upon me, O Lord; for I am weak: O Lord, heal me; for my bones are vexed. My soul is also sore vexed: but thou, O Lord, how long? Return, O Lord, deliver my soul: oh save me for thy mercies’ sake. For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks? I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears. Mine eye …

Education – then and now

by TPOL Nathan in The Price of Liberty at 20:00, Friday, 10 May

Let us return to a frequent theme of TPOL.

Modern American education is worse than a farce. It is perhaps the single greatest cause of the seeming collapse of American society, the economy, and the hope of many. A century and a quarter ago, when 8th grade was the most common expectation of Americans, what they learned in 8 years was actually far more than what the average American student has learned in the last quarter century in 13+ years of school. (Pre-school, Kindergarten, grades 1-12). And perhaps more than the majority of graduates in “liberal arts” of colleges and universities learn today.

Let us look back, not just 125 years, but 2000 years. Back to antiquity – education (in ancient Rome, during the Republic (SPQR)) and early in the Principate under Augustus and Tiberius.

The training of children was conducted by their parents, not by the state. The emphasis was on moral rather than intellectual development. The most important virtues for a child to acquire were reverence for the gods, respect for the law, unquestioning and instant obedience to authority, truthfulness, and sel...
